Border TB Photovoice Project: Voices and Images

About the Project

In 2006, the Amaya-Lacson TB Photovoice Project awarded the U.S.-Mexico Border Health Association (USMBHA) resources to implement the first Border TB Photovoice Project in the El Paso/Ciudad Juárez region. Three additional projects are also sponsored by The Amaya-Lacson TB Photovoice Project in Thailand , Brazil , and in South Carolina . The Border Tuberculosis Photovoice: Voices and Images Project is the first border binational project addressing the importance of Tuberculosis (TB) and how it impacts the United States-Mexico Border communities.

Voices and Images of TB Project uses the Photovoice method (Wang & Burris, 1996, 1998) to better understand community strengths and challenges and to be a force for positive social change. To reach this goal, sixteen community members affected by Tuberculosis from Ciudad Juarez, Chih. Mexico and El Paso, Texas went through four months of Photovoice Project trainings and prepared a photographic gallery of their perspectives, stories and insights on how TB has affected their lives and families. They consented to sharing their work with you to help communities deal with TB more effectively and efficiently. They were equipped with cameras and asked to go into their community and photograph people, places, and things that are significant for community change.

Having community members participating in this process helped determine relevant and effective solutions to the problems that affected the quality of life in their communities and through this method, participants informed decision makers to work with them to prioritize concerns and discuss solutions.

The goals of this project are to

  • increase awareness of the global burden of Tuberculosis; and to
  • assist in the eradication of TB and TB Meningitis.

The project objectives include:

  • support and mobilization of TB patients to address policy's decision makers;
  • formative research that can inform communication strategies and program development; and
  • dissemination of formative research rooted in local people's perspectives.

The Border TB Photovoice: Voices and Images Project acknowledges each and every one of the participants for their extraordinary participation, leadership and passion in making this project possible. A special recognition to the Advisory Committee members, policy and decision makers, community leaders, and all those individuals and organizations that have diligently supported, in all possible ways, the dissemination of information gathered by the participants to inform and educate residents and assist in the global efforts of eradicating Tuberculosis.
